Day 7 of the AYN Internship Program allowed the participants to participate in one of YCC activities. During that time Cambodia is celebrating their "Water Festival" this is a good opportunity for them to teach people on the prevention of HIV because because different people coming from different provinces will visit Phnom Penh to witness the said festival. According to the research that was made it is also that time that the male spend most of their time in Night Clubs and Brothel and engage in unprotected sex which later on when they got infected they return to their house and have sex with their wife and allow the diseased to spread.
Because of that in partnership with various agencies they decided to launch the said HIV prevention project where they will talk to all the people in the water festival and distribute flyers, brochures and free condoms. It was actually a very nice experience for us because considering the fact that Cambodian people are very conservative and sex education is actually a taboo to them, but considering that fact the people still listen as the youth volunteers mostly women demonstrated to them how to use condom and explain to them the importance in being part of the solution to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS.
HIV and AIDS issue is very important to Cambodian Youth because the youth are the one who are mostly ill prepared on the knowledge and information regarding that. At the same time considering the youth activities and curiousity with sex they intend to do and experiments things which they are not aware of the consequences. That is why the youth must be actively involved in addressing the said problem and being part of the solution.
The National Youth Policy in Cambodia if pass will help ensure that the youth are involved on these kinds of processes. Making their voice heard and allowing them to be part of the solution and not the problem will empower them to be an active key players in the development of Cambodia.
